DJ5AV & DX News Letter, ES2NA, I2YSB, LU3FP, LU4FPZ, OH1EH, OH2BR,
OH4MFA, ON4ATW, ON4UN and SM0BFJ for the following DX information.
IT IS WITH GREAT SORROW TO REPORT...... The DX Community learned this
week that Charles J. Harris, WB2CHO/VP2ML, (known by many as Chod) became
a "Silent Key" (SK) on December 8th. In Santa Rosa, California,
the 50
year old Chod died of complications from a severe heart attack he had
suffered in early November. Many will remember Chod for his active roles
in the DX Communty as DX columnist for "CQ Magazine", the
orginal editor
of the "DX Magazine" and "The DX Bulletin" and an
ARRL HQ staffer. He
was also an active DXer from exotic places. Mostly, the DX Community
will miss Chod's presence at the "Dayton HamVentions" DX social
gatherings.
OPDX and its readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to
Chod's family. Chod Harris, a DX icon, will be surely missed......
OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive the special ARRL bulletin about
Chod Harris as an additional bulletin.....
OPDX has also learned that Tiit, ES7RE, President of
ERAU, became a
"Silent Key" (SK) on December 7th in a car accident in Finland.
We
extend Tiit's wife and the children our deepest sympathy and strength
needed to get through the coming days and weeks. Members of ERAU and the
Board of Directors state that "Tiit will always stay in our memories
as a true gentleman and a great friend!"
PROPAGATION GURU KH6BZF STATES "The ARRL 10-MTR Contest should be better
than last year." Lee, KH6BZF, reports that the solar flux index (SFI)
should climb to near 200. Expect High Normal (HN) to Above Normal (AN)
conditions to exist the 11th and 12th. On Sunday, the band is expected
to be better than the day before.
3W, VIETNAM. Steve, K2WE (aka 3W6WE & XU2WE), reports that he will return
here in Febuary or March, and he has permission from Hau, 3W6LI, to
operate from his farm in Vung Tau, about 55 miles from Saigon right on
the South China sea. He will make every attempt to operate on 40, 80
and even 160 meters if he can get the license.
7S, SWEDEN. Rune, SM6COP, has obtained the Swedish contest callsign 7S5Q
and Tord, SM3EVR, has received 7S3E (which will probably be used in the
ARRL 10 Meter Contest. As reported earlier, the prefixes 8S, SM, SK and
SL are being issued with one letter suffixes for the SM operators for
contest activity.
8P, BARBADOS. Jon/N0JK and his father (William/W0FN) will be here until
December 14th from the 8P9Z station. There will be a special emphasis
on 6 meters using 100 watts into a 3 element yagi. They also plan to
operate in the ARRL 10 Meter Contest. Callsigns are pending as this
bulletin was being written.
9N, NEPAL (Possibly, XW - LAOS). By the time you read this, Charlie, K4VUD,
should be in Kathmandu and will be active as 9N7DU for 30 days. He stated
this week that he was going to try to be active in the ARRL 10 Meter
Contest. The "DX News Letter" reports that Charlie may also make a one
week trip to Laos.
9N7, NEPAL. "The 59(9) DXReport" reports that Lawrence, W8NRB, has
been
active as 9N7RB since mid-September, mainly on 20-10 meters SSB. He will
be there for some time. QSL via W8NRB at the W8 Bureau.
9U, BURUNDI. QSL Manager Leif, SM0BFJ, informs OPDX that Gus, 9U5D, will
go QRT in the morning of December 11th. He will be on vacation at home
in Sweden for a month (signing SM5DIC). He will return to Burundi on the
10th of January for another 3 months assignment.
HI, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Steve, K8WK, reports that he will be here from
around December 23rd through January 2nd. He plans to operate as HI8/K8WK.
Steve was assured a license by the communications authorities and that
the license would be in the mail and a copy will be kept there "just in
case." He states that it has taken him since June (1999) to obtain this
license! Steve will operate mostly CW and mostly on the WARC bands,
conditions permitting. He adds, "Please be patient with my poor CW and it
will be the first time I've ever been on the other side of a pile....."
His equipment will be an ICOM 706MKIIG (running 100 watts) and a Gap Titan
all band vertical. Steve will bring enough wire for 160 meters but doesn't
know if he will have the support to allow use of the wire. He will try
and operate as much as he can outside of his family responsibilities as
he is on a vacation. Steve will be staying at a resort in Samana Pens
(NE part of DR). He is willing to make skeds for the needy. His E-mail

QSL INFO AND NEWS.......
Jukka, OH4MFA, was operating from Thailand (HS) with the callsign
HS0/OH4MFA for several days during his holiday between November
10-26th.
He logged 571 QSOs on 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters, mostly on CW. QSL
info
for this operation is via OH4MFA and bureau cards are preferred.
Jukka
will be going back home to Finland, he states, probably in January
2000.
So QSL cards will not be answered before that time. Jukka states,
"Many
thanks to R.A.S.T. and especially HS0AC station managers Ray,
HS0/G3NOM
and Winit/HS1CKC for the possibility to operate from HS0AC
clubstation.
It was also pleasure to operate in the CQWW CW contest from the
HS0AC
M/S team!"
Bob, W7TSQ, QSL Manager for Wis, YB0AZ, reports/advises that the
best
way to get a QSL is via W7TSQ. Bureau cards are all answered by Bob
and
cards to Wis via the YB bureau just do not make to him, so PLEASE,
send any requests for QSLs to W7TSQ. Bob states that he does answer
bureau cards, though the quickest way is SAE plus postage!
Repeating,
Wis requests NO BUREAU cards to YB bureau.

SB SPCL ARL ARLX011
ARLX011 Charles J. ''Chod'' Harris, WB2CHO, SK
Former ARRL HQ staffer and CQ magazine DX columnist Charles J.
''Chod'' Harris, WB2CHO/VP2ML, of Santa Rosa, California, died
December 8 of complications from a severe heart attack he'd suffered
in early November. He was 50.
An ARRL Life Member, Harris was first licensed in the late 1960s. He
was an honor graduate of Princeton University and president of the
school's Amateur Radio club. Before coming to ARRL Headquarters, he
taught school in Watertown, Connecticut.
In the mid-1970s, Harris ran the ARRL Club and Training Department.
ARRL Executive Vice President David Sumner, K1ZZ, said Harris'
tenure coincided with the League's response to the Citizens Band
craze. ''He faced the challenge of absorbing into our ranks the
refugees of the CB boom,'' Sumner recalled. ''He poured enormous
energy and creativity into the task.'' ARRL Field and Educational
Services Manager Rosalie White, WA1STO, remembered Harris as ''a
vibrant force, with a lot of new ideas for recruitment and
education.''
Harris also helped to author the beginner's classic Tune in the
World with Ham Radio, among other publications. He also wrote
numerous articles for QST and other publications over the years and
once published several DX bulletins.
An active contester and DXer, Harris had operated from several
exotic locations. He obtained VP2ML while living on the island of
Montserrat in the late 1970s and early 1980s before moving to
California.
Harris also served as an International Amateur Radio Union Region 2
Conference delegate from Montserrat, most recently in 1995 at
Niagara Falls, Canada, where he chaired the HF Committee.
Harris took over as CQ DX Editor in July 1989.
Survivors include his wife, Jean, whom he met while working at ARRL
Headquarters.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 10, 3 PM, at
Lafferty Smith Colonial Chapel, 4321 Sonoma Hwy (Route 12), Santa
Rosa, California 95409.
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to
the American Heart Association or to the Northern California DX
Foundation. Friends may write the Harris family at 3201 Franz Valley
Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95404.

Edited by I1JQJ & IK1ADH
NA-056 ---> Eduardo, CO8LY was active as CO8LY/CO4 from Cayo Largo
(NA-056)
for a few hours on 9 December. QSL direct only to EA7ADH.
QSL 9G5AA ---> Please note that the QSL manager for the 9G5AA *1999* CQWW
CW
operation is Tom, GM4FDM (Roger, G3SXW was the manager in
charge for the
*1994* operation). Tom expects the cards from the printer before
Christmas.
Bureau QSLs can be requested via e-mail at twylie@net.ntl.com
(do not follow
up e-mail requests with a bureau card!) Otherwise send
your cards either
direct (Tom Wylie, 3 King's Crescent, Elderslie,
Renfrewshire PA5 9AD,
Scotland, UK) or through the RSGB bureau.
QSL AH2R ---> The QSL manager is JI3ERV (not JI1ERV as mentioned
in 425DXN
448, apologies for the typo) either
direct (Toshinobu Aki, 1-9-26
Ikuno-higashi, Ikuno, Osaka 544-0025, Japan) or through the JARL bureau.
QSL P29BI ---> Steve, VK4EMS made 6733 QSOs (3285 SSB, 3448 CW) operating
in
his spare time as P29BI from Bougainville (OC-135). His QSL manager
(VK4EJ)
reports he now has all the logs and can guarantee same day return for
QSLs.
Please send your cards to Bernie McIvor, 30 Brennan Parade, Strathpine,
QLD
4500, Australia. [TNX VK4EJ]
QSL P29VHX ---> Uwe, DJ9HX reports all of direct and bureau cards received so
far for P29VHX (OC-008, OC-025, OC-034 and OC-153) have
been processed.
Incoming requests are now being answered within one week.
QSL R1ANF & R1ANF/A ---> Oleg, R1ANF says that "his change of QSL
address for
the R1ANF/A operations caused much confusion". Contrary to what
previously
reported [425DXN 446], cards for both R1ANF (Russian base
"Bellingshausen",
South Shetlands) and R1ANF/A (Chinese base "Great Wall" and Korean
base "King
Sejong", both on South Shetlands) should therefore be sent to
RK1PWA (Nick
Shapkin, P.O.Box 73, 164744 Amderma, Arkhangelskaja, Russia). [TNX DL5EBE]
QSL TM0Y ---> Jean-Pierre, ON4BBA reports the cards for
TM0Y (18-25 July
activity from Yeu Island, EU-064) will are being be processed and it is hoped
to send them before the new year. QSL via ON4AMM either
direct (Mary-Lou
Moons, Oudestraat 9, B-3560 Lummen, Belgium) or through the bureau.
QSL VO2CQ ---> Chris, VE3FU (Chris Allingham, 3417 Torwood Drive,
Dunrobin,
ON K0A 1T0, Canada) reports to be in the process of having new colour
photo
QSLs printed, so it will take a few months before they are ready. There is no
need to resend your QSL. [TNX IK7WUJ]
QSL VIA I0MWI ---> I0MWI is the QSL manager *only* for M1Y
(1978-82, never
active as T77Y), T77CD, T77E, T77G (1985-92, never
active on CW), T77GM
(1989-96, pirated since 1997). Bureau cards are processed for A.R.I.
members
only, others should send their requests direct to
Stefano Cipriani, Via
Taranto 60, 00055 Ladispoli - RM, Italy. Cards for other San Marino
stations
should be routed through their QSL managers or through the ARRSM QSL
Bureau
(P.O.Box 77, 47031 Repubblica di San Marino). [TNX I0MWI, i0mwi@libero.it]
QSL VIA W3HC ---> Mac reports he has ogs and cards for HS0E
for the years
1989 (5 April-31 December), 1990 (1 January-31 December), 1991 (1
January-31
December) and 1992 (1 January-25 December). Mac also reports he is no
longer
the QSL manager for J73JT.
QSL VIA W6/G0AZT ---> "All requests received for
TY1RY cards have been
processed and are in the mail. Further requests for confirmation
should be
sent direct only to Eddie Schneider, Box 5194, Richmond, CA
94805, USA. I
only have 30 requests for GU0AZT cards. If anyone still needs GU confirmed on
RTTY, pse send your requests as soon as possible, so
that I can order a
specific number of cards". Finally, please note that Eddie is NOT the
general
QSL manager for 3V8BB. He can only confirm RTTY contacts he made from
3V8BB
on 9-13 October 1996. [TNX W6/G0AZT]
YA4A ---> It was active during the CQWW CW Contest, but it is believed it was
a pirate. Neither Jan, K5MA ("I worked him", he says, "and
have no idea why
he picked my callsign to 'nominate' as QSL manager") nor Dick, K4UTE are
the
QSL manager for this station (however Dick still has logs and cards for
his
own genuine YA4A activity back in 1963-65). [TNX OPDX Bulletin and IV3TMM]
+ SILENT KEYS + Former ARRL HQ staffer, "CQ Magazine" DX columnist,
original
editor of "DX Magazine" and "The DX

Charles J. "Chod" Harris, WB2CHO/VP2ML, of Santa Rosa, California,
died at 50
years of age on 8 December of complications from a severe heart attack he had
